Ruth Kathleen Navratil - July 02, 1943 - September 25, 2022

Departed: 09/25/2022 (Osakis)

Obituary Preview: Ruth Kathleen Navratil was born on July 2nd, 1943 to Louis Navratil and Barbara (Zeithamer) Navratil. She was one of eight children and raised on the family farm in Alexandria. Ruth graduated from Jefferson High School in Alexandria and spent time in California with her then husband, Maynard Gulbranson, as a military family. They moved back to Minnesota and raised their family on Lake Andrew in the Alexandria area.

Ruth worked at different jobs throughout her life – all of which had one thing in common. Whether it was in the job description or not, she would find herself in the kitchen baking and cooking for a portion of her work day! No matter where she was or what she was doing for work, she always found her way to the kitchen to share her love of cooking and baking with those around her. Ruth’s love of baking and cooking for her friends and family was what made her truly happy. If she could teach you how to do it also, she was proud as could be. From Christmas Cookies, Pork Chop Chili, Egg Rolls, Caramel Rolls - to the best Fried Green Tomatoes ever – she had a passion for them all. Her family will have traditions to carry on, with their own favorite recipes they learned over the years. Each will be referred to with love, as Mom’s best, Grandma’s favorite, Sisters go to – or Auntie’s classic! Ruth enjoyed playing different sports throughout her life and enjoyed fishing with family, playing softball, golfing, bowling and really enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. She enjoyed making memories and was often very entertaining when things were not going “quite right” for her – I am sure we all have a memory or two that we laugh at when we think about time spent together. Gardening may have been the biggest “sport she played” and she built a good team along the way. Everyone learned from the best and will carry on that tradition. It was her favorite past time above and beyond her sports. Gardening first, play second!

Ruth is survived by her Children; Brent Gulbranson, Steve Gulbranson, Deborah Gulbranson, and Chad Gulbranson. Grandchildren; Briana Gulbranson, Kayla Gulbranson, Jordan Gulbranson, Connor Gulbranson, and Aidan Gulbranson. Siblings; Joanne (Wayne) Fearing, Tom Navratil, Carol Leaunart and Norman (Fran)Navratil. Sister-in-laws; Nancy (Harvey) Navratil and Wanda (James) Navratil. She was preceeded in death by her Parents; Louis Navratil, Barbara (Zeithamer) Navratil, Step-Mother Ella Navratil. Brothers; Harvey Navratil, James Navratil, and Sister; Marlene (Bill) Lund.

Ruth went with the Angels on September 25th, 2022 and will be remembered with smiles through tears. The years she was in our lives will leave us with memories to cherish and stories to share with our loved ones. Her life was never about her trials or struggles as she lived with love in her heart and peace in her soul. God Bless her until we meet again.

In 1937, the family moved to a small farm north of Ogilvie. She attended school until the eighth grade, where she also helped her parents on the family farm. John Herman Terfehr - July 30, 1943 - July 09, 2022

Departed: 07/09/2022 (Osakis)

Obituary Preview: John Herman Terfehr of Osakis died unexpectedly from a motor vehicle accident on Saturday, July 9, 2022. He was 78 years old. That age though, was nothing but a number. John truly lived life to the fullest. He made each year, and each day, count.

God broke the mold when John was born on July 30, 1943, to Norbert and Margaret Terfehr of West Union. John’s life started like most Catholic boys in the area at the time. He was baptized, confirmed and served as an altar boy at St. Alexius Catholic Church in West Union. The life of the second oldest of four children was off to a pretty traditional start.

From that point on, the ride was wild. John attended District 5 Country School in West Union Township. It was there that he developed a natural skill for math – he could add and multiply quicker than most could get the answer from Siri –, he had a surreal understanding of words – which would lead to a love of crossword puzzles – and he had a true gift for storytelling – he knew at least 2,000 jokes. By memory. Dozens for any occasion. Especially the PG-13 variety.

After graduating from the Morris Ag School, John and some buddies started racing cars. He was good at it. He liked the competition, but he loved the camaraderie the most. Working on the cars wasn’t as much fun as racing them, but the time spent doing it was part of a work ethic that John carried out his entire life.

It was at this time that John started farming, like his dad, and would continue to work the fields of Todd County for most his life. He loved, loved, loved farming. Despite visiting all 48 continental U.S. states, John always said that if he could live anywhere in the world it would be exactly where he spent his 78 years – central Minnesota. He loved everything about the land, the fields, the crops and the seasons (even the cold one!), as his hobbies matched perfectly with this part of the country.

Along with farming, John also drove truck and owned and operated John Terfehr Trucking, Inc. in Osakis for more than two decades.

During retirement (yeah, right), he enjoyed a variety of leisure activities, most notably tractor pulls. He competed in pulls across the state, partnering with his close friend Dennis Christianson to collect wins at multiple weight classes. Along with tractors for pulling, John had a vast collection of antique tractors, which he also would annually enter into the West Union 4th of July parade. In addition, John spent hours and hours aboard his snowmobiles and his 3-wheel trike that he loved to ride on a beautiful summer day with his best buddy, his dog, Jax, always at his side. John and Jax were inseparable.

John’s other passions were cooking (his specialties were fantastic!), sleeveless shirts (no one had more), cards (gin rummy, skit, slap jack, and his favorite, Crazy 8), and above all else, his grandchildren. He loved them. Half those sleeveless shirts had prints of his granddaughters and grandsons on them. Family mattered more and more and more and more to John with each passing year. That was evident with how much he boasted about each and every one of the family members he leaves behind.

John is survived by his daughter, Kristine Hawkins of Blaine, and son, Doug Terfehr of Frisco, Tex. Kristine and husband Patrick, and Doug and wife Crissy, blessed John with six grandchildren: Elizabeth, Katherine, Rebecca, Landon, Taylor and Ty. John is also survived by his former wife, Jerry Terfehr of Lodi, Calif., the mother of Kristine and Doug, former wife, Jan Aoun of Mesquite, Tex., older sister Joyce Klimek of Osakis and younger brother Mark Terfehr of Dayton, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Susan Engle and a nephew, Todd Engle.

A visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2022, at Roy Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis. Mass of Christian Burial will be heldat 11 a.m. (visitation one hour prior), Monday, July 18, 2022, at St. Alexius Catholic Church in West Union where John remained an active parish member. Interment will take place at the church cemetery.

Tyler Ray Bjorstrom - September 08, 1983 - May 27, 2022

Departed: 05/27/2022 (Osakis)

Obituary Preview: Tyler Ray Bjorstrom was a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend. He passed unexpectedly on May 27, 2022. He is survived by his mother Vicki, sister Sarah (Warren), brother Jacob (Yuri), and nephews Alex and Josh. ~ Tyler will always be Vicki's baby boy. She loves him dearly. Tyler will always be in her heart, and she will miss him until the day they meet again. ~

Tyler was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father Larry.

Even though grandparents aren't supposed to pick favorites, his grandma Velma didn't care. She would pronounce loudly that Tyler was her favorite grandchild. Velma had dementia in her later years and Tyler was the only person she recognized. Velma would talk about Tyler constantly to the nursing staff and when he visited, she was happy as a kid on Christmas morning.

Tyler was loved deeply by so many family members and close friends. He was extremely smart and had a great sense of humor and a quick wit that would often go over people’s heads - unless you were sharp and paying attention! He had a natural talent for music and drawing, just like his dad.

Although he didn't have children of his own Tyler was great with kids and they were naturally drawn to his kind soul. Animals could also sense his kindness. If you were at a social gathering with Tyler, you could count on his lap being full either with kids or dogs.

We are so very proud of Tyler and all his accomplishments. He courageously fought an extremely difficult battle with bipolar depression and is at peace now sitting between his two heroes - dad and grandpa.

Tyler’s final heroic act was to donate his organs. We are thankful that his organ donation will bring happiness to other families. A private memorial service for close family and friends will be held graveside at 11:00 am on Sunday, June 5, 2022 at the Long Bridge Lutheran Church in Little Sauk, MN
