Harlan Wilmer Tenhoff - March 18, 1924 - March 05, 2022

Departed: 03/05/2022 (Osakis)

Obituary Preview: Harlan Wilmer Tenhoff entered his heavenly home Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Alomere Health in Alexandria, with beloved grandchildren at his side. Harlan was born March 18, 1924, in Osakis, MN at the family farm, to Amanda and Ed Tenhoff. He attended Country School District 12 and 22, attending through the 8th grade. He then continued to work with his family on their farm through his growing up years.

In 1947, Harlan had the good fortune to meet a tall, dark-haired beauty at a neighborhood gathering. Her name was Marie Knoblach and they were married January 6, 1948. To this union were born James, Donald, Mary, Linda, and Kathleen.

Harlan worked for a time for his brother-in-law, Leo, on his farm. In September 1950, Harlan began work at the Osakis Creamery, driving milk truck. It was not an easy job, hoisting heavy milk cans up into the truck. His kids would accompany him occasionally and can attest to the fact that Harlan literally “whistled while he worked” all day long! After his route was done for the day, Harlan began to pick up painting jobs. In the course of his life, he has painted innumerable structures of every size and shape. Harlan worked for the Creamery until 1967, at which time he began working as a custodian at the Osakis Public School. He retired after 22 years in 1989. After retirement, he continued painting and doing handy-man jobs for many years.

The “job” he enjoyed the very most was volunteering at St. Agnes School in Osakis, which he did daily for 29 years. Harlan was very mechanically savvy and there seemed to be nothing he could not fix. He was fond of asking his grown children, “you HIRED that done??” He loved a challenge.

Harlan and Marie were able to enjoy some travel, although Marie needed a bit of convincing. Their first airplane ride was a 1970 trip to California. They also traveled to Washington several times.

Harlan became a Knight of Columbus in 1949 and remained a Knight until his death.

He was never one to “sit around.” Always busy, Harlan and Marie cleaned the sanctuary and sacristy every week for countless years. If there was any job that needed to be done, Harlan was more than willing to do it.

Harlan was a man with a truly joyful spirit. He was a gracious man; he had a way of making others feel comfortable and important. He enjoyed visiting and looked forward to daily morning coffee with a great group of friends for years.

Harlan was blessed with a large family, and he looked forward to their gatherings and all the happy chaos that ensued. He was proud of each one. He was rarely seen without a smile. As a granddaughter wrote, “You taught me how to live: Simply, Happily, Generously. Spreading joy and kindness wherever you went.”

Harlan moved to West View Assisted Living in 2018. He enjoyed reading, watching the Vikings and Minnesota Twins games, and playing bingo.

Harlan has been a faithful member of Immaculate Conception Church of Osakis for many years and a constant supporter of St. Agnes School. He had an extra-large smile when the new playground was named after him.

Harlan was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marie; sons, James and Donald; grandchildren, Joshua and Angelina; and daughter-in-law, Faye Tenhoff.

He is survived by daughter, Mary (John) Lang of Fargo, ND, Linda Amren of Waite Park, MN, and Kathleen Clark of Crystal, MN; daughter-in-law, Anne Marie Tenhoff; 18 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; brother, Delbert Tenhoff of Osakis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Harlan will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 11, 2022, at 11 AM at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis, MN with Father Tom Knoblach officiating.

A visitation will take place at the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis on Thursday, March 10, 2022 from 5-7 PM with a 6:30 PM Time of Sharing followed by the Rosary.

A visitation will continue one hour prior to the mass on Friday at the church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Osakis, MN

Newman Everett Olson Jr. - April 03, 1937 - December 18, 2021

Departed: 12/18/2021 (Osakis)

Obituary Preview: Newman Everett Olson Jr, 84, died peacefully at the Galeon nursing home in Osakis on December 18, 2021, with his wife of 63 years at his side.

Son of Newman Olson and Katherine Evenson Olson, Newman was born in Duluth on April 3, 1937. In 1942 his family moved to Osakis where he attended school and graduated in 1955. He then attended Hamline University and received his BA degree in 1959.

On August 19, 1958, he married Sonya Evans, a native of Ulysses Kansas who moved to Osakis during their high school years.

Newman became President of the First National Bank of Osakis in 1972 having joined the staff of the bank in 1959. He served as President until 1999 and as CEO until 2019. In 2010, Newman celebrated 50 years of service and was inducted into the Minnesota Bankers Association Pioneer Club in honor of his lifelong contributions given to Minnesota’s banking community. Newman remained a member of the FNBO Board until the time of his death.

“Tuke” as he was commonly known to the entire community in his younger days, was active in all community affairs throughout his life. In 1967 he was elected to the local school board, where he served for many years, including time as Board Chairman. He was an Elk, a Mason and a member of the Osman Temple of the Shrine for over 50 years. He spent time serving on the Douglas County Hospital and Community Memorial Home Boards. He also served on both the Presbyterian Church Board of Trustees and the Session for many years. He was a past president of the Osakis Lions and an active Republican. He was also one of the early promoters of the Osakis Country Club.

An enthusiastic football fan, Newman held U of M Gopher season tickets for more than 50 years. During football season, an important step in planning any holiday or family celebration was to ensure all family activities happened around game times.

Newman also loved to travel. He took his family on a two or three week vacation every summer while his children were growing up. Many lasting memories were made during those annual trips in the travel trailer. Singing around a campfire with “hippies” in Teton National Park; visiting presidential libraries, family gravesites, and Chicago museums in the Midwest; dealing with treacherous mountainous roads and long travel days listening to comedy routines and The Sound of Music on a portable tape player; and experiencing extreme weather conditions including a summer snowstorm in Yellowstone and 109 degrees in the shade in British Columbia are among the memories we shared during those special times. After the children were grown, Newman and Sonya traveled to many special places around the world.

Newman is survived by his wife, Sonya; daughters Kathy (Greg) Hansen, Betsy (Loren) Pietrzak, and Chris (Spence) Engebretson; son Stuart Olson; grandchildren Jonathan and Christopher Hansen, Cory and Derek Pietrzak, Justin, Tyler and Zach Dahlheimer, Alex and Adam Engebretson, Megan and Tyler Olson; great grandchildren Everett, Elsie, Arthur, Connor, Audrey, Lucy, Leo, Archer and Wilder; sister-in-law Ilene, and several nieces and nephews.

Newman was preceded in death by his parents, Newman and Katherine (Evenson) Olson Sr. and his brother Steve Olson, Sr.

A visitation will take place on Monday, December 27, 2021, from 4-7 PM at the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home and one hour prior to the funeral service on Tuesday at the church.
